The Church

In 1949 a small group of Christians; Bro. Douglas Johnson, Bro. Otis Raines, Bro. Leo Barnett, Sis. Bobbie Johnson, Sis. Lessie Barnett and Sis. Elnora Pitts met for weeks in the home of the Douglas family for Sunday school and Bible Study. Occasionally, a minister was invited to preach. Bro. Johnson’s vision was to build a building for their meetings and he did just that. It was a small one-room structure at 2702 N. Trenton Tulsa, OK.

On Wednesday, July 13, 1949, members of the Northwest Creek District Association convened to determine the recognition of this new establishment. A motion was carried in favor of the new church and a vote was taken installing Rev. H.D. Morris as pastor. The church would be given the name Shiloh (peaceful) Baptist Church. Officers elected were; (Deacons) Leo Barnett, Douglas Johnson, Otis Raines, (Church Clerk) Lessie Barnett, and (Missionary President) Elnora Pitts.

As Shiloh grew, the original building lack the capacity needed. Therefore, in 1956 a new building was built to accommodate more members. By 1960, a nine-passenger station wagon was bought to add an additional option of travel to its congregation.

Rev. Morris would become the new Moderator of the District and assist in organizing the North Cincinnati Baptist Church. However, dwindling membership and financial trouble led the pastor Rev. Leon Davis to suggest a merger with Shiloh. Both churches would agree to the unification and on September 13, 1964 would thereafter be known as Shiloh Baptist Church.
